Community
Genoa is a small community 20 miles west of Columbus located in the Loup Valley in eastern Nance County. Genoa has an excellent school system. The city has a beautiful park and pool for recreation. There is also overnight camping. Genoa is considered a bedroom community with affordable housing.
Government
Genoa is a second class city governed by a Mayor and City Council. These officials are elected by a popular vote of the citizens and serve four-year terms in their respective wards.
Emergency Services
Genoa is served by the Nance County Sheriff's Department. Additional police services are provided by seven officers of the Nebraska State Patrol, Troop B, which is based in Norfolk, Neb. The Nance Country Sheriff’s Department consists of 6 law enforcement personnel. The city has a 30-member Volunteer Fire Department which handles the city and a 10-mile city radius. The fire department has six pieces of equipment, and is a member of the Mid-Nebraska Mutual Aid Association. The city has 21-volunteer Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) and one emergency vehicle. These EMTs service the entire city and a 10-mile city radius.
Health
Genoa Community Hospital/LTC, Park Street Medical Clinic, and Looking Glass Estates Assisted Living, conveniently located on a shared campus at 706 Ewing Avenue, provides acute hospital services, nursing home care, assisted living services, and physician services to the community. The 79-bed facility (20 acute care beds, 45 long-term care beds, and 14 assisted living beds) is fully accredited. The not-for-profit organization is owned and operated by the City of Genoa and managed by Rural Health Development out of Cambridge NE.
Staffed by a board certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, a Family Practice Physician, two physician assistants and 102 full and part-time employees, the services offered include inpatient and outpatient surgery, 24-hour emergency room, clinical laboratory, x-ray services, physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and various outpatient clinics staffed by board certified physicians in several specialties.
Nursing home care is provided in an attached facility and was built in 1987; also
attached is an assisted living facility that was opened in 2002. Both arestaffed by registered and licensed nurses, certified medication aids and certified nurse aides. Activities are directed by full-time and part-time staff. The facility has a beautiful chapel area and an aviary provides the opportunity to watch birds from a very close proximity. Home Health Services are provided through an agreement with a medical center located in Grand Island, Nebraska. Utilities
Electrical power is supplied to the city by Loup Power District. KN Energy is the supplier of natural gas to the residents and businesses of Genoa. Water is supplied to the citizens of Genoa by a city-owned and operated water department. It utilizes two wells with an average depth of 270 feet. Pumping capacity equals 270 gallons per minute and an above-ground water tower, located in the north part of town, has a storage capacity of 250,000 gallons. The city's waste-water treatment facility is designed to treat an average flow of 106,000 gallons per day. The current load is 80,000 gallons per day. Commercial and residential garbage is collected and disposed of by a contracted service provider. Users of this service pay a collection fee. Cable Nebraska is the local cable provider.
Communications
Frontier provides telecommunication services to the city. GTE has recently constructed a building which includes fiber optics for the community and surrounding area. Megavision provides internet services to the community.
Housing
There are an estimated 450 homes in the community, with approximately 95 percent occupancy. The average cost of a home within city limits is $30-35,000. The Genoa Housing Authority operates a 20-unit apartment complex called Sunrise Villa. This complex offers low-cost housing and was built in 1966. The rent is determined by approximately 25-30 percent of the tenant's income.
Transportation
Genoa's major highway, State Highway 22, is the city's main thoroughfare. Interstate 80 access is approximately 65 miles from Genoa. The Genoa Chamber strives to keep business in the community and assists in community projects such as seasonal promotions, civic and general interests activities. It provides leadership in economic and social development. The Chamber sponsors an annual event held in July named "Pawnee Days".
